Securing our transport network
"Transport matters to everyone in this country. It is our challenge and our responsibility to secure a modern efficient system that gets people from home to work and back again as quickly and safely as possible.”"Rt. Hon. Douglas Alexander - Secretary of State for Transport.On 14 February 2007, the landmark ‘Transport Security 2007 - Securing our Transport Network’ Conference and Exhibition was held at the Institute of Directors, Pall Mall, London, providing an unique forum for debate for key decision-makers across the transport industry involved in formulating present and future strategies.
An impressive Grade I-listed Regency building, the Institute of Directors provided an impressive backdrop for transport operators, regulators, senior government figures and leading industry vendors to come together and share best practice, knowledge and experience.
This one-day ‘Transport Security 2007’ Conference and Exhibition examined the Government’s approach to security on public transport, and the need for a joined-up approach to sharing security information across the worldwide transport network.
This encompassed the key areas of aviation and airport security, ports and maritime issues and the security of passengers nationwide, whether travelling by train, bus or tram. Within this context, the conference debated the importance of both technology and information sharing in providing an integrated counter-terrorist response to possible attacks on the transport system.
In particular, reviewing strategies such as: the design of stations; multi-modal interchanges; and designed-in security CCTV, as part of an integrated access control system.
Moreover, the debate stressed the crucial role of not only the senior decision-makers within the transport industry itself, but also the responsibility of the travelling public and those employed on the ground to deal with the terror threat.
With an innovative and interactive planned programme, the event featured specialists from various industry sectors, including:
- Deputy Chief Constable Andy Trotter - British Transport Police;
- Jeroen Weimar, Director of Transport Policing & Enforcement Transport for London;
- Dr Peter Ryan, Chief Security Adviser, International Olympic Committee (IOC);
- Ashley Barrett, Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer, London Ambulance Service, seconded to the London Resilience Team;
- David Bishop, Association Secretary, British Ports Association.
The sponsors of the conference - the Carlisle Group - offered further insight into the key issues of the day, together with Chris Yates, Aviation Security Editor, Jane’s International and Natalie Salmon, Head of Access to Services and Transport, The Disability Rights Commission.
The event culminated in an exclusive drinks reception sponsored by Lurline Champagnie, Conservative candidate for Mayor of London.
The ‘Transport Security 2007 - Securing our Transport Network’ Conference and Exhibition provided a platform to enable both national and international leaders from the transport sector to come together to discuss innovation in best practice and to plan for the future strategic requirements of the sector.
The success of the event is perhaps best summed up by Dr. Malcolm Reed, CBE, Chief Executive for Transport Scotland, who describes the atmosphere and the lessons learned from the day.
“It was a very interesting conference and a very worthwhile day. We have met a fascinating mix of people and, most importantly, made good contacts.”
